Onderko Notches First Heat Win of 2010
05/16/10
Sundance Vacations Speedway - The Heat Race line up was posted and once again the #58 was starting shotgun on the field. Justin commented, "What do we have to do to catch a break? (smiling) We are just going to have to be really aggressive today."
Aggressive was certainly the right word. As the field thundered down the front straight with the drop of the green flag, Justin took the #58 inside of the pole sitter #35c driving hard into turn one. Coming off turn two they were three wide, Justin on the inside, the #35c in the middle and the #88 on the outside.
As they reach the midpoint of the back stretch Justin had the nose of the #58 out in front. Still three wide moving into turn three, Justin grabbed the edge to lead them off turn four with the #88 and the #35c in tow.
Justin, with a clean track ahead of him decided enough was enough and from lap two forward Justin and the #58 gave notice to the field that he was checking out. Justin won his first Hea0t Race of the 2010 season in a commanding way beating the entire field by a half a second.
After the Heat Justin stepped from the #58 and said, "She was on a rail ... it was amazing."
The Feature saw Justin starting in 5th spot after the #36 dropped to the rear of the field. Jerry Hildebrand's #88 took the race lead from now pole sitter Troy Bollinger in the 35c before a single lap was scored in the 30-lap Late Model feature. Mike Sweeney's D11 followed through to take second.
The #71 of Lorin Arthofer overtook Sweeney for the runner up spot on lap four and began to reel in the leader. By that point in the race, Justin Onderko held fourth with 61NY in fifth.
The D11 began to fall off and Justin grabbed the third spot on lap six.
The only yellow flag of the race flew on lap eight when Bollinger and Craig Lutz tangled on the front stretch. Lutz sustained alot of sheet metal damage and was not able to continue.
Despite heavy pressure from the #71 following the restart, the #88 remained out front followed by Onderko.
With 61NY running in the fourth spot, the D11 surrendered the fifth spot to the #53 of Burns on lap 13.
As they crossed the finish line Onderko brought home the Onderko Motorsports/RPM Fabrication #58 in the third slot.
After tech Justin commented about the day's events. "We had a real strong showing today. We notched our first Heat Win of 2010 and finished strong in the Feature." Justin added, "The changes we are making are definitely taking us in the right direction. The team did a heck of a job getting us ready for today. We picked up a push in lap 15 which kept us in 3rd, but if that wasn't there I know we would of had something for the #71 and the #88. Most of all this was a great points day."
That being said once Sundays point's were posted, Justin moved the #58 up two spots into third place just 37 points out of first place.
The next race for the Onderko Motorsports/RPM Fabrication #58 will be over the Memorial Day weekend.
