On a steamy Sunday morning in the foothills of the Poconos, the Onderko Motorsports Team unloaded the #58 from the hauler. Some last minute check's and a set of four new tires to scrub in and they were set for the first round of practice.
At the conclusion of practice, Justin and the #58 were less than one tenth off the fastest posted time for the combined practice. High hopes for a good starting spot in the heat was first and foremost on everyone's mind.
Justin, laughing, commented after the drivers meeting " Maybe we have to take the handicapper out to dinner to get a good starting spot. Once again we are starting in the back of the field." Justin brought home the #58 in the 3rd spot in the second Heat Race.
The Feature Race had Justin and the #58 starting in the 7th spot. The #36 of Craig Lutz started from the pole position and led the Late Model field to the drop of the green flag for the 30-lap feature. The #36 lurched out to the early lead followed by the # 66 of Kochenash, the #16 of Harvell, the 11D of Sweeney and #53 of Joe Burns.
The #11D quickly disposed of the #16 and #66 which brought out the first of several caution flags.
Green flag racing resumed and the #11D quickly overtook the #53 of Burns for the lead. However, another yellow flew when Hildebrand's #88 spun in turns one and two. Todd Stehle and Dave Macomber were also collected.
With the green flag back in the air, Onderko #58 climbed to second, followed by #66, #36 and the #71 of Arthofer.
The final yellow of the afternoon flew when Coll's #61NY, who was obviously fighting a tight racecar, climbed the front stretch wall and rode it for at least half of the straightaway. Amazingly, the #61NY hit the pits for a new right front tire and came back out on the speedway for the final laps.
Unsuccessful, the #58 of Onderko tried all that he could over the closing laps to catch the leader. At the drop of the checkered Onderko remained in the second spot.
After the race Justin went over to shake the hand of Mike Sweeny. Justin commented about the conversation, "Sweeny said all he could see in his mirror was the orange stripe I had on the windshield. We raced hard and we raced clean. He got this one, but I "will" be back."
Back at the hauler Justin congratulated his team on a great day. It wasn't a first but after four races, Justin and the Onderko Motorsports Team are only 5 points out of first place with seven races left.
