Onderko Grabs Sundance's LM Points Lead
06.26.10 Sundance Vacation Speedway
Justin Onderko grabbed the Sundance Vacations Speedways Late Model points lead
this past Saturday with a pair of strong back to back 2nd place finishes in a double
feature night at the speedway. Starting in the 10th spot for the first make-up feature
Justin drove through the field and secured a second place finish. Justin commented
after the first feature, "We had a fast car in that first feature, but the cautions killed us
along with the #61NY's super slow restarts. We still have to make some changes for the
second feature but I'm confident we will be fine."
The second feature was filled with cautions right from the start. The first one was caused by the #40 of Geist pushing the #58 around in the third turn of lap one sending Justin and the #40 to the back of the 15 car field. Justin surgically cut his way through the field only to find out that on lap 11 the race was being cut from 30 to 20 laps due to the number of cautions and time. At this point Justin pulled the #58 into the 4th spot with just 9 laps remaining in the second feature.
At the drop of the green flag #40 tried the high groove and it was evident that his car didn’t like it, as he slipped up the track off of turn four and nailed the front stretch wall.
Time was quickly running out for the #58. Hildebrand's #88 did his best to overtake Sweeney over the remaining laps and with only one lap remaining, the #88 was overtaken by Onderko and then spun from contention on the final lap. The #D11 crossed the stripe to take the win and Onderko finished in the second spot with another strong second place finish.
We caught up with Justin after the second feature and asked him what he thought of the race. Looking up in the sky he smiled and remarked "There must have been a full moon out tonight, it was crazy out there. Guys were sliding around banging off one another. It was just nuts." When asked about his pair of bridesmaids finishes he said, "I know if we would have had the last 10 laps I would have been able to get by Mike. I could see he was loose and I know we were fast. We had a really good points night and I wouldn't be surprised if we aren't leading and if that's the case Mike got the win but I got the points lead and right now that's more important to us as a team. There are six races left and this is where we wanted to be right now. We are so close, it will come."
In checking with the scorer after the second feature, Justin was right. He was a full tenth
faster than the entire field and left the speedway tonight with the Late Model points lead.
